-Arnold Schwarzenegger posted this to Twitter on October 8, 2016. I urge everyone to read this.
As many people are aware the second presidential debate was recently held this past Sunday, October 9, 2016. For those that were not aware, well you didn’t miss much. Essentially all that happened was Donald Trump deflecting every question and redirecting them to Bill Clinton’s indiscretions (from over 20 years ago) as well as the problems we face with ISIS.
Mr. Trump equated his obscene comments about women to casual locker room talk, many male athletes have taken to Twitter expressing disbelief with his comments. Many of them stated that in all their time as adult athletes they’ve never heard anything remotely similar to the things Donald Trump calls “locker room talk.” Donald Trump’s staunch supporters don’t seem to find anything at all wrong with the fact that he said these things. His supporters are saying “who cares he’s saying what he wants he’s not censoring himself why is that such a bad thing?” His comments not only continue to perpetuate the rape culture in this country that many are attempting to fight but also degrade women. Women are not property meant to be man handled by whomever sees fit.
There are so many countries in the world where women are treated as property and its considered an awful, unbelievable thing that many people are appalled by yet, here we are in 2016 and Donald Trump says that because he’s a star the same consequences don’t apply to him.
We saw how Mr. Trump deflected all questions but let’s talk about Secretary Hillary Clinton’s performance.
She’s spent so many years in politics that I don’t think she knows how to reach the average voter. She’s over prepared for these debates. She’s facing someone that has become the King of one liner soundbites that are picked up by the press published and republished and that’s all anyone remembers. She continues to alienate the undecided voters that still have yet to decide whom they will vote for in November if they choose to vote at all. When the candidates were asked what they respect in one another although both gave compliments Trump was the only one that didn’t spin his own agenda, he answered the question while his opponent complimented her then turned it into another talking point.
So who won? Donald Trump? Hillary Clinton?
In my humble opinion I think America lost on Sunday.
The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement or the TPP is a free trade agreement that according to the Office of the United States Trade Representative is going to “Level the playing field for American workers & American businesses.” It is meant to be an agreement between the United States, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Singapore, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
Both Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump have been against this agreement since its inception. Hillary Clinton on the other hand had strongly supported the agreement throughout her tenure as Secretary of State. As of late last year she has flip flopped her stance on multiple occasions and at one point stated she [didn’t] “believe it’s going to meet the high bar I have set.” A statement she made during an interview with PBS Newshour’s Judy Woodruff.
Like any free trade agreement there are Pros and Cons. By providing you with the information you now have the facts required to formulate an opinion.
Wildlife trafficking is to be cut down by all aforementioned countries, those that do not will be penalized. The US Trade Representative TPP Fact Sheet states that this deal will cut 18,000 different taxes placed on Made in America exports. Not only will the TPP establish the highest standard of labor and worker protection in history but it will also provide the necessary incentives to keep American jobs in the United States. In doing so they will also enforce strict transparency rules to aid in the cutting down of corruption. Not only will this deal aid the manufacturing industry but it will also give a helping hand to our small businesses and the agriculture industry. These tax cuts will assist farmers and ranchers in expanding their exports. Small businesses will have to deal with less red tape and essentially everything will be moved across borders more efficiently.
The downfall of this deal directly related to American’s is that with all the increases in income, those gains would only go to those that make more that $88,000 a year. One of the biggest opponents against is the medical sector. Generic drugs would no longer be cheaper than the brand name drugs. Their prices would skyrocket. This deal was supposed to be transparent and free of corruption but those same promises have already been broken. These discussions are taking place behind closed doors not open to the public. Documents from the agreement have been leaked that would set a precedent for any of these listed countries to circumvent the laws in place that could lead to an undermining of democracies all around the world.
It would not be feasible to list all the Pros and Cons on this page. I urge each of you to look into this matter. Whether you’re reading just one article, the fact sheet provided by the US Trade Representative, or you choose to read the whole agreement we all need to be informed of the very things that will affect our day to day life.
For anyone that hasn’t yet watched this video, I truly recommend that you take the time and watch this. I understand that it is a clip from HBO’s Network, “The Newsroom”, but still the message is clear.
This country is at a turning point not only in the eyes of Americans, but in the eyes of the world. People are more divided than ever before. When we get our news, be it through the newspaper, social media, or what have you we are all made aware of the extreme violence happening not only in this country but all around the world. From the rising number of gun related deaths to terrorists attacks all around the world we’re all in need of love, safety, and guidance.
Listening to Donald Trump’s acceptance speech after being nominated as the Republican Parties Presidential Candidate, I couldn’t help but remember this video that I had replayed countless times so many months before. The tone of the Republican Convention last week was one of despair and fear. According to Donald Trump and the GOP, America needs to rebuild itself. We need to close our borders and alienate the very people that make up this great nation.
In Donald Trump’s acceptance speech he listed countless ways this country has declined since President Obama took office.
“In 2009, pre-Hillary, ISIS was not even on the map.Libya was cooperating. Egypt was peaceful. Iraq was seeing a reduction in violence. Iran was being choked by sanctions. Syria was under control. After four years of Hillary Clinton, what do we have? ISIS has spread across the region, and the world. Libya is in ruins, and our Ambassador and his staff were left helpless to die at the hands of savage killers. Egypt was turned over to the radical Muslim brotherhood, forcing the military to retake control. Iraq is in chaos.Iran is on the path to nuclear weapons. Syria is engulfed in a civil war and a refugee crisis that now threatens the West. After fifteen years of wars in the Middle East, after trillions of dollars spent and thousands of lives lost, the situation is worse than it has ever been before.” -RNC Draft Speech Transcript Provided by the Politico Staff
With all this negativity that he spoke of there was no real concrete plan as to how he was planning on solving these problems.
We have the opportunity in not only this election but in all elections at the local and state level to make a change that benefits this country. We have the power to make the United States the most powerful country in the world in all aspects. We have the strongest, bravest, men and women fighting for our freedoms to support our way of life. We have to make our armed services proud and use the rights they fight so hard for. Whatever party you belong to, exercise the rights that every generation has fought and continues to fight for by voting at your local levels.
